Frugal and Free X-Mas Tree Trimmings

3 12 2010

As commercials and advertisements bombard our mailbox and television with the upcoming holiday sales, we wondered about ways to save.  The holiday season can be costly — if you allow it to be.  Most importantly, holiday purchases aren’t just limited to gifts.  Often times we leave out the costs of greeting cards, stamps, wrapping paper, the Christmas tree, holiday decor and tree trimmings.  Those alone can average $50.  Including these items is important when setting a holiday budget.

When it came time to decorate our tree we wondered if it were possible to decorate a tree without having to spend a dime!

Voila:  Here is our pinecone-Christmas-tree!

This was such an easy and fun activity.  First we searched for pine cones.  A quick rinse under warm water removed any dirt and dubree.  Second we strung fishing line around each pine cone to form a loop.  Finally, we  hung them on the tree branches.

The tree was $20 and we had green lights on hand.

This is fantastic! It gave me the idea for another easy ornament… what about cotton balls dipped in glitter (assuming you have glitter lying around) – instant snow!
