Deployments can shake up a budget. Set aside funds (or open a separate account) for deployed member expenses. For example, you may elect $100 per month. At month end if $50 remains in the account, deposit another $50 to balance your budget for the next month. We cannot forget about pre-deployment expenses. Work them into your budget prior to the deployment.

“57% of Americans have no emergency plan in place or emergency supplies for disasters”–National Center for Disaster Preparedness 2009. Everyone should have an emergency fund (3-6 months of cash in a liquid account) along with proper insurance (homeowners/rental, auto, etc.) to minimize financial disasters (job loss, environmental catastrophes, etc). Create your plan.

One word: Inflation. Wow! Did you know $5.00 in 1945 has the same purchasing power as $62.00 in 2011?  http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl
